Image Compressor: Compress Photo to 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB Online

The tool keeps the best quality that stays under your limit. If your form needs an exact width and height, use the Photo Resizer instead.

What this image compressor does

An image compressor makes the file of a photo smaller, so that it fits within the KB limit of an online form, an email or a website. This tool lets you type the maximum size you need, for example 50 KB, and it finds the best quality that stays under that limit. You can compress up to 10 photos at once, and download each one separately.

Everything runs in your browser. Your photos are not uploaded to our website, and they are gone when you close the page.

How to compress a photo

  1. Press Choose your photos and select one or more images from your phone or computer.
  2. Enter the target size in KB, or tap a quick button such as 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB.
  3. Choose what to do if the quality alone is not enough. Also reduce the pixel size a little is recommended, since it works for almost every photo. Keep the pixel size is for the cases where your form needs the exact original dimensions.
  4. Press Compress photos.
  5. Look at the result under each photo: it shows the new size, the pixel size, and how much smaller the file became. Press Download for each one.

Image Compressor or Photo Resizer?

Both tools reduce the KB, but they solve different problems.

  • Use the Image Compressor when you only need a smaller file and do not care about a fixed width and height. It is also useful for many photos at once.
  • Use the Photo Resizer when your form asks for an exact width and height together with a KB limit. There you enter the size in pixels, mm or cm.

If your form has a fixed pixel size, resizing first with the Photo Resizer is the better way.

How compression works

A JPG photo stores the picture in small blocks, and the quality setting decides how much detail is kept. A lower quality removes fine detail and makes the file smaller. This tool tries different quality levels, and picks the highest one that still stays below your KB limit, so you keep as much sharpness as possible.

If even the lowest useful quality is not small enough, the tool can reduce the pixel size in small steps. A photo with fewer pixels needs fewer KB, and at normal viewing size the difference is usually hard to notice.

Tips for better results

  • Start from the original photo. Compressing an already compressed photo again lowers the quality further.
  • Do not aim for a tiny limit if you do not have to. A 20 KB photo is much softer than a 100 KB photo. Use the limit your form gives, not a smaller one.
  • A plain background helps. Plain areas compress far better than busy patterns.
  • Avoid filters and heavy editing. They add detail that takes more KB.
  • Check the result on your screen. Open the downloaded file once before you upload it.

Which format does it save?

The compressed photos are saved as JPG, the most accepted format for forms. PNG and WEBP photos are converted to JPG. If a PNG has a transparent background, it is filled with white. To learn more, read our guide on JPG vs JPEG vs PNG.

Is my photo safe?

Yes. The compression happens inside your own browser, on your device. No photo is sent to our servers or stored anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos can I compress at once?

Up to 10. Add them together, set the size once, and the tool handles each one.

Why did the tool say it could not reach my limit?

The limit may be too small for that photo. Try a slightly higher KB limit, or use the Photo Resizer with a smaller pixel size.

Why did a photo stay the same?

If a JPG is already below your limit, the tool keeps it as it is, so its quality is not reduced for no reason.

Will the quality look bad?

Compression always removes some detail, but the tool keeps as much as your limit allows. At the normal size of a form photo, the difference is small.

Can I compress a photo to an exact size, like exactly 50 KB?

The tool aims to stay at or below your limit. The final file is usually a little smaller than the limit, and that is what most forms need.

Is this tool free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
